One of my fondest childhood memories is making ornaments during the holidays. Inspired by that nostalgia, I wanted to create something special for my dog, Elsa, and decided to start a new tradition: making a personalized dog ornament each year. It’s simple, fun, and captures a little piece of your pet’s personality. I used a clear ornament, decorated it with Sharpie markers, and filled it with a bit of Elsa’s fluffy fur.
This guide will show you how to make your own version, along with ideas for customizing the design and using these ornaments in meaningful and creative ways.

What You’ll Need for This Project
Before getting started, gather the following supplies:
Clear shatterproof ornament – perfect for keepsakes https://amzn.to/48k84Uy
Sharpie markers (or paint markers) in various colors – for decorating the outside
Sharpie Permanent Markers: https://amzn.to/3MoqTOT
Sharpie Creative Markers: https://amzn.to/48xXfiS
A small amount of your dog’s shed fur – easily collected after brushing (Elsa produces a fluffy cloud amount in the winter!)
Ribbon or string – to hang your ornament once it’s finished

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Plan Your Design
Think about what you want to draw. It could be your dog’s name, paw prints, bones, hearts, or even a simple portrait. Sketch your idea on paper first if that helps.
Start Drawing
Use the Sharpies to carefully draw on the outside of the ornament. You can layer colors once the first layer dries. If you make a mistake, quickly wipe it off with a paper towel before it dries.
Remove the Ornament Top
Carefully take off the ornament’s top to create an opening.
Insert Fur
Use tweezers or a small funnel to place the fur inside. You don’t need a lot—just enough to create a soft, fluffy layer visible through the clear ornament.
Secure the Top
Replace the ornament top tightly to keep the fur inside.

Ways to Use Your Dog Ornaments
Once your ornament is ready, think about how to enjoy it:
Holiday Decoration
Hang it on your Christmas tree to celebrate your dog during the holidays.
Gift for Pet Lovers
Personalized ornaments make thoughtful gifts for friends or family who love dogs.
Memory Keepsake
Keep it as a special reminder of your dog, especially if they have passed.
Home Decor
Display it year-round on a decorative hook or shelf.
